Dowsett Family Gewürztraminer
The acclaimed Celilo Vineyard has the perfect soil and climate for ripening our full-bodied, dry Gewürztraminer. Our block was planted in 1982 and is dryland farmed by Rick Ensminger and his crew. We are in awe of the ability of old vines to respond to differing harvest seasons, and create stunning fruit. This Columbia Gorge vineyard is truly a new world Grand Cru for Northwest Gewürztraminer.
The fruit is hand picked into small bins late in the growing season. A slow, gentle press cycle is used to maximize light press juice, and provide some skin contact. The juice is fermented cool in neutral French oak barrels. Two different yeast strains are used to promote complexity. The fermentation is usually stopped at around 0.3% residual sugar to produce a dry style. The wine is not inoculated for malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the lively acid balance.
The aromas of fresh fruit, honeysuckle and roses can carry for hours. The sur lees ageing in the older barrels, gives a full bodied mouthfeel with firm acidity. This wine is a beautiful match to many hard to pair cuisines. We produced only 50-200 cases of this wine. From the Dowsett family, to your family…
2013 Dowsett Family Winery Gewurztraminer Celilo Vineyard Columbia Gorge – 91 Points
“Healthy bright yellow. Lovely lift to the aromas of white peach, ginger, linden flower and rose petal. Offers a sexy touch of sweetness but this is essentially a very dry, tactile, broad wine, with a peach flavor complicated by spices and a saline element. Sappy, energetic gewürztraminer, conveying an impression of solid dry extract. Finishes with excellent sneaky length. In recent years, this has consistently been one of my favorite dry gewurztraminers made outside Alsace and this 2013 version is an excellent example.”
